The Subconscious Mind

The subconscious mind is powerful, it’s the thing we rely on when we are driving, we just go into automatic pilot. It’s the sub conscious that is responsible for our dreams, or nightmares.  It’s the subconscious that controls some of our habits and our self-limiting beliefs.  It’s that voice, the one that tells us negative things, the one that’s says, “don’t eat that, it’s high in calories, “don’t drink that alcohol, it’s bad for you” probably messages we have been exposed to or overheard, they get stored away as being gospel. We may have encountered an experience in childhood and those associated feelings also get stored away. Both good and bad. Until something triggers it. Could be a song, a smell, a photograph or simply a memory. Or at times of stress, anxiety and self-doubt, it’s those bad memories, bad feelings that tend to surface.

It’s also sometimes referred to as that chimp on our shoulder, the one we try our best to control. Sometimes I am successful, and sometimes I am not. But I am better than before.

The Chimp Paradox is a great read for those people that are interested in the sub conscious mind and trying to understand how to control their inner chimp. I enjoyed reading it and its written in a way that is easy to understand and with examples that help bring the point home.

There is a lot of research out there, with many techniques, counselling therapies, such as CBT, the use of Hypnosis, or NLP, that’s Neuro Linguistic programming for the uninitiated, that talk about how our subconscious mind works, how to control it, how to make new memories or how to re wire our sub conscious mind etc. But making sense or knowing what’s right for you is a minefield and can cause more worry. I just wanted to understand me more.

Over the past two years I have been researching, studying, reading and doing lots of on line training, watching videos, receiving newsletters from various motivational speakers and life coaches and getting to grips with some of the models from Mind Tools. It fascinates me and one of the reasons I decided to become a life coach, I understand myself a lot more now and I am very self-aware and I hope to bring that awareness to my clients. Once you have that, I feel you can move forward.

It’s clear our minds are very powerful, our conscious and subconscious minds are very different, I had things buried in my subconscious that I had never dealt with, tried to forget ever happened, told myself if I didn’t think about it, it would go away, yes, that was my conscious mind telling me that, but no one told my sub conscious mind. And he brings them memories back, mostly at times when I least expect it. He was especially busy during the menopause 😊

Anyway, I am here to help anyone that is suffering from these negative thoughts, self -doubt and crippled by self-limiting beliefs.
